Based My One Time Testing: 3 Expired Domains as a PBN didn’t Give Positive Effect to My Money Site

Emmen
Hello everyone,
I'm testing some new private blog network (PBN) tactics now. So just set up a plain site with just one article and point it to a competitor with a small amount of exact match anchors. When l do this l see some really different numbers. Expired domains of which l was sure they were giving some positive effect on my ranking were not giving this positive effect! So when l tested my last 3 expired domains. One of them did nothing (l will still wait some weeks) and gives a slightly positive effect and one gives a lot of positive effect. So l think l will be giving the great domain a exact match anchor and the slightly good domain a longtail anchor.
But there is a problem. When l implemented the links to the competitor l saw a direct impact in less then 4 hours. So l was really happy to see this because normally it takes me 3-4 weeks before l see any impact. So when l changed the article, added some more text on it and entered a exact match link to my MS l see nothing happening.
Is this normal? I see these results of Matt his links and there are giving positive effect in days. How is it possible that a competitor sees direct impact (in less then 5 hours) and my money sites sees nothing after 7 days..
My website is ranking top 3 for main keyword so l understand that l need more powerful links to get it to #1. But still there are going some more expired domain links and I'm just sure that my new link is not giving the power yet.
Help me please!

1. it takes exponentially more power to see movement the closer you get to #1.
2. anchor text ratio can affect your movement. the more you have of that anchor the less each link of same will move. A site with no anchor will jump a lot more for that anchor.👍1

thanks for the reply. I understand both points.
So when you are top 3, you know you have a healthy expired domain but exact anchor doesn't trick. Do you use you expired domains for adding those branded anchor texts or do you use other services to add more branded anchors?
Got some healthy domains now, but not sure if I need to keep building exact match links or buy some other links for branded anchors.
Vincent
I wouldn't use a powerful domain for brands or raw url. to me thats a waste of power. I use citations, directories, etc for that. I would either use it on another money site, use it to power your tier 1 or sell links/SEO with it. *** BUT – i recently had a site penalized and perhaps this is part of the reason why – I have no idea. You're gonna have to see what some other experts have to say about that.👍1
Emmen
✍️ Yeah, that was my experience also that I'm only using expired domains for keyword anchors.
So l still got one question left. All these conclusions are based on those 2 points you told me in the first comment. So you are defintly sure that it couldn't be that it just takes longer then these 7 days before I see any impact on my MS?
Vincent
yes ive seen it take longer the closer you get to the top. if the PBN link has proven to have power based on a test link, then I will set it and forget it. I haven't seen it take more than 30 days. Other guys have reported other time frames. hopefully other guys can chime in on this thread…👍1
Emmen
✍️ Thanks again for your reply. Its just for me to know what is the BEST way. So there are 2 solutions I can do now:.
1. Add more exact match anchors from expired domains to my MS. I do this because I think it takes longer before I see any impact on a MS.
2. I stop adding more exact match anchors from expired domains and add more branded anchors by directories or citations. I do this because I think the power of the links on my expired domains are seen by Google, but don't give any impact because my anchor text ratio is to high.
Dunno what to choose. Especially because I added links 7-10 days ago. Don't know if l need to add more exact match links or add new branded links.

I would add more branded, URL and long tail partials. someone posted they also use this strategy »» exact match, then non and then exact match then non until they hit #1.👍1
Emmen
✍️ So you would choose option that the expired domain links already pointed there strength to the domain. Because of this you think you need more branded links.

I see affect of my PBN in one day after my article indexed on google.
Emmen
✍️ Okay. I will check out some other sites to!
Kim
You need to check if your article indexed on google yet. It's time it play the game.
Emmen
✍️ Articles are indexed in google. I also see impact when l link to my competitor. Problem is linking to my MS i don't see any improvements. It could be time or it could be anchor text optimization.
Kim
I think it is your anchor text, you need to send synonym anchor text or some one else. Let me know when you see any result.👍1

Emmen
✍️ Will do, thanks Kim. Hopefully its time because then l don't need to make some new branded links 😛.

Vivian
Why don't you focus on building your site up rather than bringing theirs down? Lol.

Emmen
✍️ Its just for testing. I always delete the link.

Matt
It has to do with the way you're structuring the tests.
Because you're sending it to a competitor there's a ton of different variables coming into play which are polluting the test results.
– Did you send the right anchor?
– Is the competitor already receiving links?
– Are there proper social signals?
– Domain age?
– etc.
Instead send to a site that hasn't received links in years. Send an anchor that has never been sent before, yet that site still ranks for it somehow. It doesn't matter if the test site is in your niche or not. You just want to be able to confirm: is this PBN an asset or not?
Once you show a positive result, send it to your site. If you don't see the result you expect, then you know for sure its not the PBN. And then you can start looking at your anchor text, onsite, social signals, etc.
SEO is all about eliminating variables.👍6

✍️ Thanks Matt! Really appreciate the comment.
Its true that l can test the link on different sites (outside my niche). Are there any quick ways to find sites that you can test your PBN links on?
So if you know that a PBN is good you point it to your ms. If you don't move for the keyword after sending like 30 PBN links (now ranking #3 for main keyword) you need to tweak your branded links right? Still not sure how long to wait before seeing impact. I want to add some branded links now, because l don't see any improvements yet. Dunno if this is because of the time the link needs before l see impact or because l need more branded links… that's still a problem for me.

I'll let you be creative on this one. What kind of websites might not have received links in years?
About getting from 3»»2»»1, this is completely speculative. I don't know who's is above you. Is it WebMd? How big is the gap? Getting from 3 to 1 is always a big step. Throw everything you have at it, reverse engineer links, and work on your CTR.👍1

✍️ Old abondened sites maybe. Or some web2.0's..
They are not really competitive. Just some local businesses. Don't have a great link profile or onpage. I live in a foreign country so there isnt any big company on top. Just some local businesses that don't even understand what SEO is lol…
Emmen
✍️ Sorry Matt.
, I still don't know on which sites I need to test my PBN links. Maybe its an easy question for you, but I really don't know how to find websites that didn't get any links in the past years.. Could you please help me?

Vincent
You're overthinking this. what I do is pick a keyword I'm going for, grab the sites on pages 2 and beyond and link to them with that keyword anchor text and sit back and watch what happens. if it drops in ranking for that keyword then I look at over optimization causes; too much exact match anchor, keyword stuffing etc. if you want to be more precise, look at those sites first before linking to them and see if the anchor text you intend to use, has been used before. if it has, pick another site. what you're looking for is – a site that doesn't already have the anchor text that you plan to use.
Emmen
✍️ Yup, doing that at the moment! 4/10 sites gave positive results, 2/10 negative, 4/10 still not seeing effect. Those first 4/10 sites that had a positive effect are now linking to my MS. This is the way right?
Vincent » Emmen
yes. now note the amount the site has moved e.g 10 spots, 20 etc and use the most powerful for your toughest keywords. the ones that don't move use for brand/raw/misc anchors. the negative; test another site, maybe the ones that had positive movement as you know they are healthy.👍1
Emmen
✍️ Yes thanks for the information!
Matt
Brainstorm sites that could have a past year associated with them that still might be hosted. For example, a politicians 2014 election campaign site.👍1

He means sites in the pages 4,5…👍1

✍️ Thanks both! Really appreciate it. Also movies that are old and have a specific website.
