Use Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords to Boost Your Website Organic Traffic

The Summary of Discussion 2: Does It Need to Get to 100 in Latent Semantic Indexing LSI Keywords?
Here's how you can use LSI Keywords to boost your Website Organic Traffic
LSI keywords are the words or phrases which have a considerable correlation to your target keywords. Google has now started to focus on the entire content, which means stuffing your content with keywords will no longer rank your web pages. It is when LSI keywords come into the picture.
Since the LSI keywords are closely related to the target keywords, your blog posts automatically become relevant and eventually rank higher on the SERP.

Here’s how LSI keywords can help you boost the website traffic.
Before starting with the LSI keywords and their impact on improving website traffic, let’s first understand how these LSI keywords actually came to existence. LSI keywords are derived from the 90’s computer technology LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). The technology was developed to help a computer to read and understand a piece of content like humans.
LSI identifies several patterns and relationships within a textual form, i.e., your content, and indexes the information in such a way that it is understandable by a computer program. It makes it easy for the computer to understand the overall context of the content itself.
When it comes to SEO, LSI has several benefits that make it one of the significant SEO tools to improve your website’s rankings and thereby increase the web traffic. These benefits include:
Potential to Drive Organic Traffic.
Provide Readers With Better User Experience.
Helps You Find Valuable keywords and phrases
We all know that Google consistently tweaks its search engine algorithms to provide users with accurate search results for their queries. As a result, it becomes crucial for content marketers and bloggers write content is such a way that it is always ‘search engine friendly’ regardless of the updated Google algorithms. You constantly need to improve your content marketing tactics to always stay ahead of the curve and targeting LSI keywords is the place to start.

🔗🏹
Though the above definition may have cleared the concept of LSI a little bit for you, it can still be hard to relate it to search engine rankings. For many people, LSI only means one question, how can a mathematical term be related to search engines and website rankings. So, here’s a more precise definition of LSI in terms of online marketing.
Latent Semantic Indexing is an algorithm that helps search engines understand the content on a web page and compare it with users search engine query to provide him with the most accurate search results.
So, for every individual search query, LSI helps the search engine to scroll through thousands and thousands of web pages to find the most relevant pages by finding connections between the context and the language.
How Does LSI Work?
The LSI algorithm basically identifies the semantic relations between the website content and the user’s search query using various factors. As per the algorithm, these semantic relationships are categorized as:
Semantically Close-When the content has a huge number of similar words.
Semantically Distant-When the content has only a limited number of similar words or phrases.
While determining whether two pieces of content are semantically distant or close, LSI analyzes different word patterns to find the context of the content. The three major word patterns involve:
Phrase Correlations and Associations.
Similarities and Synonyms.
The volume of synonyms.
Based on these three patterns, the LSI algorithm identifies the similarity value and accordingly assigns it to the particular blog. It means that the more common words and phrases a document has, higher would be its similarity value. While ranking the web pages, the search engine then used these similarity values to rank a website for the particular user query.
It’s worth noting that the algorithm works the same way as a human brain. For instance, we, as humans, don’t necessarily know all the words and their meanings. But whenever we come across a new word, we try to relate it to the words that describe the situation and easily understand the whole context.
It means that LSI helps search engines to read and understand the content like a human brain, which eventually leads them to deliver the most accurate search results for every search query.
LSI From Mathematical Point of View
Latent Semantic Indexing
🔗🏹
Since LSI is a mathematical algorithm at the end, let’s try to understand it from a mathematical point of view. Now, even if you aren’t much of a math geek, it’s worth noting that some of the concepts of LSI are too interesting to ignore. So, let’s understand the mathematical notion of Latent Semantic Indexing. However, we will only be taking a look at the elements which helps the search engine to rank the website.
There are two different aspects of LSI algorithm that affect the search engine rankings and are worth noting for improving SEO performance. These factors include:
Natural Language Processing-This is an area of research that identifies connections between human languages and computers. It includes the distributional hypothesis to identify the language similarities. To simplify things, Natural Language Processing tries to find words and phrases that are similar to certain words by analyzing a relation between them.
SIngular Value Decomposition-This is the area which focuses on studying patterns to figure out which results are worth retrieving for a certain search query. It finds relationships between the terms and the concepts. So, while retrieving web pages for a search query, the LSI helps the search engine to find and display the relevant results.
How to Use This Information
So, the real question is how you can use the concept of LSI to improve your website traffic. Well, the simple answer is to optimize your content in such a way that both Natural Language Processing and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) can find patterns between your content. Here’s how you can optimize your content:
Develop a similarity throughout your content by adding common phrases, words, synonyms, and terms.
Cater to SVD by adding correlated phrases and words so that the entire content has a clear theme.
The Relation Between Terms and Concepts
While as advanced as the algorithm may sound, it becomes extremely difficult for LSI to find the context when it comes to jokes and sarcasm, which might be too easy for a human. For instance, the phrase “Are We Done Now?” can mean a variety of things.
For a person who’s working in a daily job and whose shift is up can ask this question to his supervisor to check whether he can leave or not. On the other hand, a couple in a relationship can ask this question to each other to check whether they’re broken up or not. As humans, we can easily understand both these cases based on the situation and the person’s expressions. However, a search engine doesn’t understand expressions and emotions. So, how do search engines tackle such situations?
This is when the concept of LSI and context comes into the picture. As LSI helps the search engines to find the context of the content, it becomes easy for them to understand what a certain phrase or sentence means in a particular situation. Therefore, the clearer the context is, easier it would be for the search engine to rank it among top rankings.
The Difference Between a Term and a Concept
Here’s how term and concept are different from each other.
Term: A word or a phrase used in a particular instance.
Concept: A universal truth for which everyone has the same meaning.
For instance, the word “Rattlesnake” is likely to be a concept because people across the world have the same meaning for it, i.e., a species of a snake.
“Love”, on the other hand, is a term because ten people will have ten different perceptions and meanings for love.
LSI uses both the term and concept to identify the relationship between related words and phrases. It allows the algorithm to find the exact context of a particular document.
How to Implement LSI in Your SEO Strategy?

🔗🏹
You might be using certain keywords to rank your web pages in the top rankings. While this is a good SEO strategy, but the truth is most of your competitors are doing the same. So, what steps you can follow to outrank them and increase your website traffic. By using LSI as one of your SEO strategies, you can easily achieve this goal. How? When you add LSI keywords to your content, you make it more contextual and accurate for search engines.
How Search Engines Crawl Web Pages?
To understand hoe LSI helps search engines rank a website, you must understand the science behind the web page crawling. Search engines usually crawl website using bots which tracks the backlinks and content on the web pages and indexes them along with certain keywords.
So, whenever types in a certain query in the search bar, LSI goes through these indexed web pages to find connections between the search query and the documents. Therefore, as a content marketer, it is your job to make it easy for the search engine to crawl and index your web pages so that your rankings never get sabotaged at all.
The best way to do this is by adding LSI keywords to your content so that your content is extremely targeted for certain queries.
Tips for Improving the Content Crawlability
Create a list of keyword phrases which are related to your target keyword.
While avoiding keyword stuffing, scatter these keyword phrases across your content to increase its accuracy and relevance to specific keywords.
Add synonyms of the target keywords while maintaining a proper meaning.
Do not overuse the keywords in your content as it damages the content readability and may even lead to a Google penalty.
How to Add Context to Your Content?
So, how can you add context to your content so that every time a user types in a search query, related to your business, your web pages appear in the top results? If you have been performing SEO for a while now, you must be familiar with the early days of SEO. The days when all you had to do was stuff your articles and blogs with keywords and achieve better rankings. However, this tactic soon became one of the biggest problems for search engines as websites with no credibility at all were ranking as well.
To avoid people from using this and many other bad SEO practices, Google started using LSI as one of the algorithms to find relevant content for a specific search query. We all know that mastering the latest SEO tactics is extremely crucial if you want to achieve better search engine rankings. Therefore, using LSI as one of your SEO strategies is imperative as it can help you attain significant results in no time.
Here are two of the LSI methods which will improve your website rankings and performance.
Structuring Web Copy
Using LSI Keywords
1 Structuring Web Copy
LSI does not only focuses on the context of your content but considers the web copy as well. So, make sure that your content has all the necessary H1 tags with target keywords scattered precisely. Furthermore, it is crucial to pay attention to the grammar of the entire blog as all these factors affect your website rankings. Everything from accurate H1 tags and relevant paragraphs helps you establish a perfect web copy. Here’s how you can structure the web copy of your content so that it’s SEO friendly.
Add Bold and Italic sentences as they have more weight than regular paragraphs.
To increase relevancy, add keyword synonyms.
2. Using LSI Keywords
Like we mentioned many times, adding LSI keywords improve your website performance and helps you achieve better search engine rankings. Utilizing it as a part of your SEO strategies will eventually grab the attention of search engine and your target audience, which will help you attain better website rankings.
LSI keywords are categorized into two different categories.
Keyword Synonyms: Phone: Smartphone, Mobile Phones, Cell Phone, etc.
Related Words and Phrases: Phone: Android Phone, iPhone, Windows Phone, etc.
To infuse these LSI keywords into your article, you have to make a list of all the LSI keywords for your main keyword. Finding LSI keywords is extremely simple and the entire process only takes 15-20 minutes. Here we have listed some of the methods to find LSI keywords.
Google Search
We’ll start with as simple as using Google to find the LSI keywords. Enter your target keyword into the Google search bar and it will drop down a list of a bunch of suggestions. All these suggestions can be treated as the LSI keywords. However, make sure that they are relevant to your business niche.

Similarly, scroll down the search engine result page (SERP) where you’ll find related search phrases. These are the phrases which the search engine has associated with your target keyword and which majority of users use to perform a Google search.

Using Google search is one of the conventional and easiest ways to find LSI keywords for a specific keyword.
Google Keyword Planner
Another easy way to find LSI keywords for your target keyword is to use the Google Keyword Planner. You can simply use the keyword planner by logging into your Google Adword account. In case you don’t have an Adword account, create one as it’s completely free and can help you get the best keyword ideas for your blog posts.

SEMRush
SEMRush is one of the most convenient SEO tools which can also be used to find LSI keywords. Use the "Keyword Research" tool under the feature tab on the home page of SEMRush. Enter your target keyword into the search bar and hit enter.
Image—-
Scroll down and locate the phrase match keyword section. You’ll get a couple of phrases that relate to your target keyword. To get an expanded list click on the View full button at the bottom-right corner of the list.
Image—-
This will display a list of all the related phrases which can be used as LSI keyword to improve the credibility of your content.
You can also find LSI keywords using several other online tools like Ahrefs and LSI Graph. However, whichever tool you are using make sure to infuse keywords and phrases which are relevant to your content. It is crucial that your content does not lose its quality and meaning while adding LSI keywords.
LSI Practices Which You Should Avoid:
Stuffing Meta Descriptions with too many keywords.
Losing the content value while infusing LSI keywords into the blogs.
Using Irrelevant keywords which has no significance to the content whatsoever.
Switching the flow of the content in between.
Adding More Context
The one last tactic to improve the context of your content is to pick a theme for your keywords and maintain it throughout the blog even if you are switching to a new topic.
For instance, if you’re writing about “Best Android smartphones of 2019” and start talking about iPhones anyhow, make sure that it has a certain relevance to the rest of the blog. It will make it easy for the search engine to find the context of your blog. Try to naturally infuse these LSI keywords into your blog so that your blog doesn’t lose credibility at any point.
Benefits of LSI Keywords
Now, that you’re familiar with the benefits of LSI keywords, let’s quickly take a look at some of the benefits of adding them to your content.
Helps you achieve better search engine rankings and thereby more organic traffic.
Improves the Overall Revenue Potential for Your Business.
Improves Content Credibility.
Makes it easy for the search engines to find the context of your blogs and then rank them for specific search queries.
Helps you craft engaging content which eventually lowers the bounce rate of your website.
Improves blog authority.
LSI isn’t any rocket science and anyone with proficient writing skills can utilize it as their content marketing strategies to achieve the desired online exposure from the target audience. You can’t think of your website ranking higher in the SERP if your content marketing game is not up to the mark. Therefore, make sure to sprinkle LSI keywords into your content to make it more accurate and authentic.

POP noob here – Is there an easier way to understand exactly how to fix under and over optimized keywords/Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)? I'm a little confused about how to fix this.
Is my adjusted score high enough to rank at this point or do I need to get to 100?

POP is wack, it'll recommend you do things that are against technical web best practices just because other websites in the top 10 have bad website structure. don't go by the score # just check recommendations, note what your competitors are doing and check for things that make sense.

ugh

i just started a trial (and forgot to cancel…) a couple weeks ago to test it out on a few important pages. recommends to add more 5 more H1 tags and reduce my target keyword count to 0 just as examples… so just think carefully about what it is recommending, it's just a guide to compare you vs what's currently ranking.
Blake
If Google's currently rewarding pages in your niche for having multiple H1's does it really matter what 'best practices' say? Are we trying to follow the Webmaster religion or get results? Just saying… 😃
Personally, I test PoP recommendations while keeping a backup of the last version of the page. If it works and still reads well to the user, we roll with it.

Troy
seems kind of silly to make changes against web best practices to satisfy a number for some program. if it recommends useful things to add or change to your page then of course that's going to be helpful, but shooting for a score on this program is definitely wrong.

yea
h i saw that stuff, definitely interesting. i looked it up again and i guess Google deindexed their site for that shit! very cool though won't deny that

the site was deindexed for the Loren ipsum…using PoP with legit content isn't against going to cause an issue at all. When I follow the page structure recommendations, I end up adding all kinds of media files to the page. I emphasize important concepts with more bold and italic tags. I organize topics into ordered lists…honestly experience with this tool seems to indicate it's mostly encouraging us to build richer content. I have a case study that's going to go live on their site soon. It's worth checking out if you have a chance.
Troy » Blake
oh yeah i get that it was deindexed for the lorem ipsum stuff. i probably should just look into POP more and just learn how to use it better (especially since i'm already paying for it lol) but i'm not a fan of some of these recommendations, going against web best practices and "score chasing". i'll check out your case study though if i remember. Marcus the keyword was "rhinoplasty plano" for rhinoplasty in plano texas. it got to number 2 for a while and Google penalized and deindexed the site.

"Is there an easier way to understand exactly how to fix under and over optimized keywords/LSI?"
POP relies on the inputs (keywords and URLs) you provide and then measures the occurrence of key on-page elements between all of the sites entered.
Based on the URLs entered, POP will calculate the min/max of each element and possibly make other calculations to find statistical norms (mode, mean, median, standard deviation) that are used to provide the given recommendations.
If the 5 URLs you enter have an average of 3 h1 tags and yours has 6 of them, POP will recommend that you reduce the number of h1 tags by 3 to make your page more similar to the others.
Since POP doesn't analyze the backlink profile of the URLs you enter, those recommendations won't take into account those URLs might have other factors working for them which could explain their rankings beyond counting, measuring, and comparing the occurrence of on-page elements.
If you want to better understand how to optimize your pages for the keywords you're targeting, I would suggest re-visiting your keyword research as it is the foundation of everything else and the most common area of weakness, either because it wasn't done in the first place or not done well enough.

Nick ✍️
Is there a way to remove LSI words because i think there are some branded terms in there from my competitors which is bringing down my score needlessly
Dolman » Nick
remove them from where?
Nick ✍️ » Dolman
from the POP competitor pages.. i have LSI terms showing up as high importance which are branded terms. i know i should just ignore them but if i could remove them somehow it would probably increase my optimization score.
Dolman » Nick
you aren't trying to rank for their branded terms so you can just ignore those suggestions. Probably a good idea to contact someone from their support team to suggest adding the ability to exclude keywords from the analysis.
